If someone asked you 'What's your Style?' you might find it difficult to say, would you even know?

Clothing is all about being comfortable with yourself, expressing your personality, and translating self- esteem into personal style. A style personality is how the traits of your personality & character are communicated through your clothing. No one person’s style personality is better than another, each is unique & positive in its own way and your mix of style personalities combine to create your individual style.

There is a very powerful relationship between our personality and clothing choice. It’s beneficial to identify our fashion personality to sustain a consistent image of our personality and experience less confusion when shopping for new items. Even if you stick to a dress code in your working environment, you can still express yourself with items that reflect your fashion personality in your outfits.

Although we may recognise & admire the style of others, we find it surprisingly difficult to identify our own Style Personality! Your wardrobe only has to work for YOU! You don't have to consider anyone else.

You don't have to dress in the latest fashion to be stylish, what you wear only has to work for you & your own lifestyle. Most importantly, to look confident in what you're wearing you have to feel comfortable!

Do you know what feels right for you? Are you secure enough to stick to your style personality? Or do you shop in panic and think you should be someone you're not, spending money on items that you are only attracted to once and will probably sit in the back if your wardrobe (I see this all the time).

Think about it like this .......

Have you ever been shopping with a friend and she is drawn to pretty dresses, whilst you make a beeline for the sharp tailored blazers and jeans? That’s your individual style personalities shining through. Your friend loves touchy-feely fabrics with lots of detail, layers and layers of bangles and jewellery, embellished shoes and I bet my last dollar that she is wearing pretty matching underwear. She’s a Romantic! You on the other hand, love understated elegance, well-cut clothes, in neutral shades, with just a small splash of colour now and then. Your wardrobe is small but made up of well thought out basics of blazers, classic shirts, cashmere jumpers, jeans and tailored trousers. If this is you, chances are, you’re a City Chic.

Of course these are just two examples of style personalities; there are six main ones, but there are a further five! In this blog, the focus is on the main six personalities that I discuss with my clients, read on to find out more about this fascinating subject.

So what are these 6 Style Personalities & where do you fit into the mix?

The “Creative”: A Creative will shop in vintage or second hand shops (plus Vinted, Facebook or borrowing & swapping with her friends). She doesn’t follow fashion & style rules, instead creating her own unique signature look, putting the most unexpected items together & carrying it off to perfection. She isn’t afraid of mixing prints & texture. I rarely carry out wardrobe Edits for Creatives as these people want to do their own thing which is great!

Unconventional and bohemian, these ladies are perfectly at ease with their look & don't need approval from others! Undoubtedly there is an artistic flair - as it is the only Style Personality that is almost impossible to pull off if it doesn’t come naturally to you! It's often a feel for the unusual, the 'treasured find' that makes the outfit, although others may think it is merely ‘thrown-together’.

The “Dramatic”: A Dramatic loves fashion & enjoys shopping. She buys into many trends & constantly runs out of space in her wardrobe! She isn’t worried about practicality and will often be the one in the highest of heels at a party.

There s no missing the woman with this striking personal style; bold, makes an entrance which commands confidence, & whatever the occasion it is always done properly & with immense passion & flair. Dramatic ladies like a detail, an unusual accessory, a bold colour choice or print & carry of the image of independence & confidence!

The “Romantic”: A Romantic loves pretty clothes; ribbons, frills, texture & embellishment. She spends a long time getting ready & always, always wears perfume! She is not afraid to show her femininity, rarely casual & always an eye for detail.

The feminine style personality is all about softness, beautiful drape fabrics, lace, ruffles & delicate accessories. Nothing is too much trouble or takes too much time to get ready, she is ladylike, delicate & youthful.

The “Classic” or “Elegant”: A Classic always looks neat & tidy. She enjoys a wardrobe filled with neutral colours & functional styles, &  is rarely drawn to print. Her clothes are well pressed, her hair is styled, her clothes are tailored & classic in design. She is often ready for business, a “no panic” lady always in control, with a dependable & trustworthy look.

An Elegant lady is in harmony with all things polished, perfect & understated. Quality is important to her list of must-haves & her self-assurance & poise are always noticed & admired. Her preference is for quality rather than quantity leading to a wardrobe of beautiful fabrics in minimalist, feminine styles. Her secret obsession can be searching for beautiful vintage items.

The “Natural”: A Natural prefers a comfortable, functional & unpretentious style. She doesn’t get on with restrictive clothes that dig & pinch, preferring  a relaxed and simplified style; unfussy and dressed-down look allows her to feel comfortable in your own skin.

She is the one that checks the label to ensure the garment can be machine washed before purchasing!

The Natural is more tussled hair & minimal make up, preferring to keep everything simple and natural. She is an elegant woman who is relaxed & laid back, carrying the image of approachable ease & open-mindedness.

The “CITY CHIC”: A City Chic follows trends rather than fashion. She buys the best quality that she can afford & invests in stylish basics (a blazer is her go-to jacket). She doesn’t ‘do’ detail and prefers neutral colours. Her look is uncomplicated but always effortless.

Understanding your style personality makes it so much easier to build a cohesive wardrobe of clothes that you will enjoy wearing. You are less likely to make mistakes too, so in the long run, you’ll save yourself some money. You won’t fall fashion victim as you are making informed choices. And how you wear your clothes tells people a lot about you so make sure you are giving them the right information!

The saying we are all too familiar with “I have a wardrobe full of clothes, but nothing to wear” is most likely a result of not understanding your individual style, and it’s easily addressed once you have identified it.

During my Edits I can often identify two or more style personalities for my clients, although one will be more dominant than the other. For example someone could be a City Chic with Creative tendencies ( that will be me then). That’s ok, in fact I find it more fun and expressive!

As we age & encounter different life stages our style personalities can shift, or not align to these life stages in the way they once did (think Motherhood, empty nester, career change, relationship ending, retirement etc). And of course it goes without saying that I dress very differently now to when I was working corporately in London (I definitely prefer how I dress now) and very differently when I am running around the woods with my kids - but all still have the essence of my style personality. For example a Dramatic style personality would find running around after a child in a well-fitted suit impossible, but getting dressed for work is a cinch to them.

One of my favourite parts of my job is finding out & providing guidance on how to help you to fulfil your style preferences within your current lifestyle!

If  you haven’t already, why don’t you book in with me to chat about discovering your style personality and how I can help you really fulfil your style potential!
