It’s Time to Ditch These Shopping Habits Ladies:
If you’ve decided you want to work on your wardrobe; stream-lining what you have, maybe going down the route of a capsule wardrobe that all works harmoniously together, then you absolutely need to ditch those shopping habits that aren’t working for you, & may have got you into the rut or ‘mess’ you now find yourself in. In my job, these are the most common ‘behaviours’ I hear about, or see, most frequently.
‘It was such a bargain, but I don’t know what to wear it with?’
You need to learn to resist that strong urge to purchase an item / or items just because they're on offer or sale. Ask yourself, “does it really suit your style & needs?”, plus can you think of at least 5 ways to wear it?“The sizing is always wrong!”
Sizing is BONKERS, we all know it but that doesn’t stop it being frustrating when trying on or ordering online & it doesn’t fit correctly. And with every store fitting differently, my simple advise would be to get to know your own measurements! Familiarise yourself with your current measurements, so that you can double check your favourite stores sizing on their branding charts.
3. “ I stock up on basics from Primark, H&M etc” or “I don’t want to spend a lot of money on an item I don’t know that I’ll wear”
Time to stop ladies and be confident in your shopping. We are all guilty of quantity over quality, buying the cheaper version because it has less risk and, understandably, if money is tight you need to think about what you are buying. However, it is far more important to invest in fewer pieces in the best quality you can afford that will withstand regular wear instead of only lasting a few months at a stretch
4. “I’ll get the smaller size & fit into it”
This was how I wasted £100’s in my twenties, on items a size smaller, or worse two sizes smaller, to try & shrink into …if I could go back again I would tell myself it isn’t worth it, you’ll potentially feel disappointed & you are wasting so much money! Please don’t buy pieces that don’t fit exactly how you are the day you are purchasing.
5. “ I panic buy a new outfit for every event”
Definitely start by shopping in your current wardrobe, looking at rental companies, and maybe investing in only one item to refresh a look you’ve worn previously. The last thing you want is a wardrobe full of worn-once dresses, I see this every day & they sit gathering dust unfortunately.
6.“ But I saw “X” wearing it & it looked great on her”
Ever feel bombarded by ads, influencers, constant emails with offers of exciting newness to tempt you? It's overwhelming and I cannot keep up, even though I’ve unsubscribed/won’t be persuaded (often) and I would certainly advise you to do the same. Influencers, in particular, get paid to sell you products. Only follow those you trust and that align with your personal style, with items that are in your price bracket of affordability.
7. “If I change my mind I can always return it!”
Yes you could, but buying with the intention to return usually means it’s probably not meant for you, it’s so much better to purchase pieces you can love long-term
I really hope this helps; maybe it gave you a lightbulb moment or food for thought? If you recognise these behaviours in yourself, try to make break any current habits so that new thought patterns become part of your ‘norm’. You’ll see what a difference it makes to what you buy & most importantly what you leave behind!
