A Guide to Denim

Jeans; love them or hate them, they have come a long way from being something invented for 12th century sailors as a trouser built to last on the seas. This casual trousers of the 80's and 90's has become a wardrobe staple and, I for one, love them, BUT this staple is killing the planet. We need to educate ourselves in what we are buying, plus we don't want to waste money on jeans we never wear or get disheartened when trying on our jeans because it is just one of those things that sucks!

Did you know:

  • 2 billion pairs of jeans are made EVERY YEAR

  • 2 millions tonnes of chemicals plus between 2.5-10,000 litres of water are used in EVERY PAIR (it would take one person 10 years to drink this much water .... just to put it into perspective)

  • 99.9% of denim contains synthetic indigo which includes the chemicals: cyanide, formaldehyde & aniline (toxic to marine life)

So, I've put together a simple guide for you to understand the different leg shapes (in researching this I found over 60 differing names for leg shapes of jeans .... no wonder it's confusing), how to measure yourself & some style inspiration to give you some new ideas. The most important thing is about ignoring the size ....."WHAT!" I hear you shriek in horror but believe me, working with hundreds of ladies, plus trying on hundreds of pairs of jeans I know this to be true! Plus, it has really taken the stress away for me of trying on jeans when I'm going for what the fit & what they look like over the silly numbers on the label.
