With the denim maxi skirt set to be everywhere in 2023 - have you got yours yet?

The style gurus of TikTok have spoken: The denim maxi skirt is going to be the ‘it-girl’ wardrobe staple of 2023, and it is already prevalent as a trans- seasonal staple but is it worth investing in? Net-a-Porter have tipped it as one of their spring/summer 2023 ‘must-haves’ & will be adding no less than nine styles to their offering next season. So have you been tempted, or do you already have yours?

Taking the lead from luxury labels, who set the trends for the season, it certainly hasn’t taken long for us to see a whole host of high street stores working the trend into their collections, and what’s more sell out almost as soon as the styles land in-store & onto their websites. In addition out social media feeds are full of the skirt of the moment and “How to wear” guides (mine is on it’s way you know I always get there eventually but clients come first and it’s a busy time for me with a fully booked April coming).

The skirt boasts an ability to be worn in any season or climate so I wanted to check this out for myself and delve a little deeper to identify if this item could become a new “superhero” style in my wardrobe. It’s fair to say that a pair of jeans read as casual whereas skirts have a dressier reputation, but a denim midi or maxi skirt however, can achieve a happy medium, especially with the smart-casual style we are all looking for. With denim as the material, the garment will bring a sense of everyday ease to your look, and the knee- or ankle-length silhouette will lend some polish & that feel of ‘put together’ we are all seeking.

The most favoured maxi style is undoubtedly the split hem, allowing for flashes of skin between the heavy, floor scraping fabric. The cool kids are sporting the style with Y2K-esque tops, but those of us who aren’t Gigi Hadid or Julia Fox, I am here to give you much more versatile “ways to wear” and for me ( & my my insecurities over my knee thanks to the bullies at school) I’m looking for a non-split version.

Although denim skirts may fill you with 90s flashbacks, think about styling them as your favourite pair of jeans; so for me the tee, blazer combo of my daily uniform will be easily transferred to the denim maxi - giving me a much needed break from my trusty mom jeans.. Then, once the weather starts to warm up (oh, how we’re hoping that happens soon), simply swap out for a simple T-shirt, blazer & leather flat (hot this season) or a statement pair of sandals to see the style through all seasons.

My favourite “Ways to style” the Denim skirt of the Season:

  • With a pair of black knee -high boots, a beautiful skinny knit & sharp tailored blazer

  • If you go for a light-wash denim skirt pair with white / light grey jumpers, trainers (ideally with a pop of colour) e.g. Veja, New Balance or Converse & leather jacket

  • Use the belt loops to add some of your personality to the skirt with your favourite belt, or to break up the silhouette if you need to balance your proportions. I’d go for a textured, printed or a good quality leather belt

  • Add a semi-fitted sweatshirt, leather jacket & trainers or boots for an everyday casual vibe

  • Double denim; rock a denim shirt or blouse, breaking the silhouette with a belt to add personality or to balance the shoes & jacket options

  • With a graphic tee, statement colour pop heel & checked blazer ( this is my favourite way to style)

  • With a neutral satin shirt & heel combo to dress up the look, add a leather bag with gold chain to finish the look & elevate the denim

  • A tee, dark long-line blazer & pair of leather flats (hot this season, check out my Top 10 on the Blog pages on my website)

  • Keeping everything monochrome beside the skirt; black knee highs, a crisp white shirt, time less tailoring & a simple accessory or two

  • A statement shirt & pair of leather sliders once the weather warms up

  • Base the look with stripes (tee, fitted vest or skinny knit) & a statement necklace

While there are plenty of new season denim maxis available to buy now, don’t forget to search pre-loved to grab yourself a bargain. Resale sites are teeming with preloved styles & recently reported that searches are up 217 per cent compared to last month with the nostalgic bleached versions & low-risers all selling well on the platform, the denim maxi is definitely on my radar, I just need to make sure its going to be as versatile as I need for the purchase to made. Will certainly keep you posted on the one I choose to go for, if & when I do!
