My Top 10 Simple Styling Tricks
Sometimes we are lucky if we can grab 10 minutes to get ready so speed, simplicity &
Handful of tips will help you to easily pull an outfit together when racing out the house for work, the school run or for a drink with the girls.
Always try to dress how you want to feel, not for your current mood: Clothes are so powerful; think about any times you haven’t enjoyed what your wearing & the mood it can easily put you into? Even if all you are doing is working from home, doing the school run, or running errands, if you want to feel your best, then put on a proper outfit. Simple things such as adding your lipstick, wearing a bright colour or popping on a blazer for your Zoom meetings will have a huge impact of how you feel
Balance your proportions: This is a must if you want your outfit to be aligned and aesthetically pleasing. Think about where you are heaviest (e.g. top-heavy or bottom-heavy) and use an item / accessory, fit of a garment to draw the eye to where you want it to go. For example: if you are top-heavy / bigger busted, use an item to draw the eye downwards such a necklace, scarf or single breasted blazer.
Elongate your legs: There’s a reason we are all loving the high-rise jeans, trousers & skirts; they will instantly make your legs look longer! It’s that simple
Wear your right length: Talking of legs, it is vital to wear the right length of trousers, dresses & skirts to give you the most flattering proportions. If you wear jeans tor trousers that are too long & bunch around your ankles, your legs will look shorter (or ‘stumpier’ as I often hear clients say). Always try to buy from brand who offer multiple leg lengths, or get them altered, it’s worth it. In addition, dresses & skirts which hit the widest point of your calf will give the illusion of a bigger leg than you may have, even if that widest part is due to having strong, toned legs.
Wear one statement item: If time is not on your side, keep your outfit simple with just one item to stand out; the statement or hero item. For example, a bright scarf, a statement bag or a colour pop earring (or beanie as the weather drops further). Its a great way to stay looking polished, quickly
Roll your cuffs: I started doing this because my arms are super long (around 2” longer than the average), as it’s almost impossible to find blazers or shirts long enough, and now I rarely go out without ruching up my sleeves up. By simply rolling-up / ruching your cuffs to see more of your wrist, it will makes such a difference to the overall look of your outfit. Firstly, it always makes the outfit look more styled, secondly it can help to balance your proportions (as in my case it stops my arms looking even longer), and thirdly it emphasises where your natural waistline is so can be super flattering too.
Add an accessory: I am a statement necklace kinda girl (ha ha you don’t say), but since working as a Personal Stylist I have definitely grown my earring collection too after seeing how elevated a simple jeans & tee outfit can look with the addition of a pair of fab earrings. So, if you are rushing to get ready, or haven’t planned your outfit, then go for jeans & a T-shirt, but add an item of jewellery. Your look will be instantly elevated, it will look like you've made an effort, plus it can make the most basic of outfits look styled & ‘put together’
Add some tailoring: The addition of some structure to an outfit will make you feel like you are ‘put together’. For me, a tailored blazer is one of my most useful items ( I probably wear one every day) & helps to elevate my go-to jeans & a tee looks. But even the most casual of looks, such as leggings & an oversized sweatshirt will become more elevated with the addition of a structured blazer (just don’t make it look like you’ve borrowed your dads & it’s drowning you, these look great in a photo on Instagram but walking round Tesco not so much)
Textures adds interest & fun: I add texture to almost every look I put together, for example: leather & satin, denim & suede, knits & silks. Wearing different textures together can both elevate & add depth to a look
Add a belt: Before working as a Personal Stylist my belt collection centred around maybe one basic belt, that I never really wore. Now I see the power a belt can add to an outfit & I cannot create my looks without them. The right belt can: pull a look together, enable print mixing & colours to merge smoothly, create definition within your shape, make an outfit look more expensive & chic and the right belt can even make your legs look longer
