Pink

The most powerful colour of 2022, let’s hear it for the rebirth of PINK!

Minimalists & those muted palette-lovers amongst you look away now, because this trend is bright, unapologetic & brilliantly sugary. Enter: #barbiecore! Since the first-look images of Margot Robbie as the blonde bombshell character in the upcoming Barbie movie dropped (which I’ll 100% be going to see even though my daughter has zero interest in the doll), the nostalgic doll became the season's unlikely style heroine. Post-pandemic fashion has been all about one thing: high-voltage shades & mood-boosting dopamine dressing. So much so, Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli dedicated his entire AW22 collection to hot pink; in collaboration with Pantone, they are producing the now infamous “Valentino Pink PP” Pantone shade. There wasn't a single celebrity red carpet that didn't have at least a flurry of fuchsia from Lizzo to Zendaya, Kim K to Travis Parker. And every celebrity photographed in this bright pink goes viral 100mph.

WGSN have reported that womenswear collections are 89% pinker than the year before. Unlike so many catwalk trends, pink really is for everyone; at the end of July, Google searches for pink dresses & skirts were at an all time high as we hit the summer months & this is continuing at full force as we hit the Autumn.  There is no doubt about it PINK is the colour of the season. This once playful (often childish shade) has been reclaimed by the fashion mob as a serious player & it is coming for your wardrobe, in particular through your accessories. From dusty nude all the way through to vibrant fuchsia, industry insiders are carrying the shade with pride & a childish smile. Whether its a bright pop against a neutral backdrop, or paired with similar shades, you’re onto a winner (& it’s easier to wear than you might think).

Given the designer AND celebrity seal of approval, it's no wonder searches for ‘Barbie’ have shot up 90% on Pinterest & the hashtag #Barbiecore has had 7.4 million views on TikTok. Looks like it's time to jump on this season's bravest trend. Come on, reader. Let's go party!

BUT ….. Did you know?

Did you know that historically the colour pink was associated with baby boys, but since the 50’s it has been synonymous with girls. In fact pink for girls became such a stereotype, it was deemed “wrong” & “effeminate” for boys & men to wear or associate with it.

Pink has been given a hard time over the years, often associated with negative undertones, for example, making DIY toys pink to target women. Now it is a colour that evokes fun, post-covid, it's also emblematic of the gender blur & breaking down of boundaries we are seeing now (my son & husband are both strong in their pink game). There’s a reason we have sayings such as “tickled pink’ or seeing things through “rose tinted spectacles”; pink evokes a feeling of optimism & feel good quality, boosts your mood & brings positive energy to your style & fashion (which I am all for).

With the war in Ukraine, the uncertainty over our cost of living crisis & the the government (well, enough said right?!) its no wonder we are all reaching for a colour that evokes joy & happy vibes. So, how are you going to wear your shades?

Pink is the colour of happiness, & it’s for EVERYONE, however you identify!
